1. Designing and planning the network The first phase in the life cycle of a network involves creating its design, a task not usually performed by new network administrators. Designing a network involves making decisions about the type of network that best suits the needs of SCGC. 2. Setting up the network After the new network is designed, the second phase of network administration begins, which involves setting up and configuring the network. This consists of installing the hardware that makes up the physical part of the network, and configuring the files or databases, hosts, routers, and network configuration servers. 3. Maintaining the network The third phase of network administration consists of ongoing tasks that typically constitute the bulk of the responsibilities. They might include: a) Adding new host machines to the network b) Administering network security c) Administering network services, such as NFS services, name services, and electronic mail d) Troubleshooting network problems 4. Expanding the network The longer a network is in place and functioning properly, the more SCGC might want to expand its features and services. Initially, the network administrator can increase network population by adding new hosts and expanding network services by providing additional shared software. But eventually, a single network will expand to the point where it can no longer operate efficiently. That is when it must enter the fourth phase of the network administration cycle: expansion. Setting up a new network and connecting it to the existing network using a machine functioning as a router, thus creating an internetwork Configuring machines in users' homes or in remote office sites and enabling these machines to connect over telephone lines to your network Connecting your network to the Internet, thus enabling users on the network to retrieve information from other systems throughout the world Configuring UUCP communications, enabling users to exchange files and electronic mail with remote machines 5. Configure and Install Networks and Operating Systems One of the main duties of a network administrator is setting up, configuring, and deploying networks and operating systems for organization-wide use. The network administrator determines the organization's data storage and transmission needs and makes key decisions regarding network setup and capacity to provide users with reliable access to key data and software. The network administrator may also directly install operating systems and programs on user hardware. 6. Provide User Technical Support Network administrators provide direct support to end users, particularly during system setup and installation, as well as during network changes. This can include helping users install software and ensuring that it works with the network settings and operating system, troubleshooting connection or performance issues, or providing guidance on IT-related processes and procedures. The network administrator may also resolve help desk queries. 7. Monitor System Performance The network administrator routinely monitors network performance to ensure reliability. This can include reviewing error logs, conducting regular tests of system speed and reliability, and following up on issues reported by users. The network administrator may also conduct routine system audits to assess security and stability, changing configuration to resolve issues or improve reliability. 8. Oversee Backend Infrastructure The network administrator designs and administrates many of the backend or network-side elements of an organization's network architecture. This can include installing network-wide antivirus programs or firewalls, configuring databases and access, and deploying network-side upgrades to enhance performance. The network administrator also periodically evaluates the need to upgrade or repair these systems while limiting the impact of these changes on employees. 9. Conduct Data Backups network administrators prevent data loss and unauthorized access by performing and verifying network data backups. Most network administrators follow internal or external guidelines to back up network data according to a schedule, while also backing up network data as requested. After completing a backup, the network administrator examines the network data and performs tests to make sure that it's intact and correct. 10. Enhance Network and Server Performance The network administrator also develops strategies and introduces improvements to enhance server, system, and network performance. This can include system-wide updates as well as changes to end user settings, software, and data access. In many cases, the system network administrator may also propose improvements to software and hardware to IT management or executives. 11. Install and support LANs, WANs, network segments, Internet, and intranet systems. 12. Install and maintain network hardware and software. 13. Analyze and isolate issues. 14. Monitor networks to ensure security and availability to specific users. 15. Evaluate and modify system's performance. 16. Identify user needs. 17. Determine network and system requirements. 18. Maintain integrity of the network, server deployment, and security. 19. Ensure network connectivity throughout a company's LAN/WAN infrastructure is on par with technical considerations. 20. Design and deploy networks. 21. Perform network address assignment. 22. Assign routing protocols and routing table configuration. 23. Assign configuration of authentication and authorization of directory services. 24. Maintain network facilities in individual machines, such as drivers and settings of personal computers as well as printers. 25. Maintain network servers such as file servers, VPNgateways, intrusion detection systems. 26. Administer servers, desktop computers, printers, routers, switches, firewalls, phones, personal digital assistants, smartphones, software deployment, security updates and patches. III.
