Our client is a growing CFO and accounting services firm supporting values-led organisations.They are seeking an experienced Senior Payroll Officer to support the Finance Operations Manager in delivering accurate, compliant, and timely payroll for approximately 800 employees, primarily within the automotive industry, along with several smaller entities.This role is primarily focused on Australian payroll processing, with additional Assistant Accountant and bookkeeping responsibilities across the rest of the week. The successful candidate will operate within a structured finance environment and support multiple client entities.Your ResponsibilitiesPayroll Processing (Primary Focus)
- Process high-volume Australian payroll across weekly and fortnightly cycles (approximately 800 employees)
- Validate timesheets, overtime, allowances, and commissions
- Process new starters, terminations, and final pays
- Prepare payroll reports prior to payroll finalisation
- Investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies and adjustments
- Ensure compliance with Australian payroll regulations including PAYG, STP, and superannuation
- Maintain accurate leave balances and payroll records
- Support payroll tax reporting and reconciliations
- Identify payroll anomalies or risks and escalate when required
- Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions
- Perform bank and balance sheet reconciliations
- Prepare and post payroll journals in Xero
- Assist with month-end close processes, including accruals and prepayments
- Support financial reporting preparation and variance analysis
- Maintain accurate payroll and accounting records within Xero and payroll systems
- Respond to payroll-related queries from employees and stakeholders
- Liaise with managers regarding timesheets and payroll approvals
- Assist with process improvements and documentation where required
- 3+ years of experience processing Australian payroll
- Experience with high-volume payroll environments (200+ employees)
- Strong understanding of Australian payroll fundamentals (PAYG, superannuation, STP)
- Xero accounting experience
- Experience preparing and reconciling payroll journals
- Experience in accounts payable and receivable processing
- Demonstrated experience supporting month-end accounting processes
- Experience with accruals and prepayments
- Strong balance sheet reconciliation capability
- Strong Excel skills (including reconciliations and analysis)
- High attention to detail with strong analytical ability
- Ability to investigate and resolve discrepancies independently
- Experience using Employment Hero Payroll
- Exposure to fixed assets, provisions and liabilities, and financial reporting preparation
- Experience supporting multi-entity environments
- Experience working within outsourced or client-service finance models
- Experience contributing to financial analysis or reporting packs
